OLD BLOG from 2009 I think.
Today I had my annual performance appraisal. I understand why they are done. I comprehend there can be benefit. I still hate them.
It made me start to think: do people REALLY improve because of performance appraisals? Would they have improved anyway? Are PA's merely a way to track an employees flaws for HR purposes? I could read up on it but my brain is full tonight and since I hate them, I am not interested in learning any more about them.
Was my PA bad? No. I have a very good manager who tries to make the process relatively painless.
I just don't want to be bothered by with PAs. Let me work, make money, continue to improve myself (because I know damn well when I need to make a change) and get on with life.

I suppose "hate" is a strong word. Of course, I see how evaluating ones self and others can bring about positive change.
I have no desire to change my job, climb the corporate ladder anymore or get a promotion. I think that is why I am very tired of annual appraisals.
I think evaluations do their jobs if the recipient makes a positive change in his or her job performance - presuming they were not already doing so!
In my current position, I have never seen a promotion or pay raise based on my evaluation. I need to apply for a different job or just ait and wait to see if I will get an annual pay raise.
Some companies do give raises based on the evaluations. It is situational.
Almost 100% of my raises in 20+ years have come from rewriting my job description and showing management that I have been doing the work of a higher paid manager.
I am not real sure why I said "hate" when I wrote about evaluations. Rarely do I "hate" something. When I was younger, I enjoyed the evaluations. Now, I don't care any more and they are pretty much a waste of my time and the time of my boss. If I screw up, I defintely know it and will correct myself. I always strive to do better...on my own.
Did my appraisal do anything for me this year? No.
